Set in 1916, "The Choral" follows the story of a choral society in the fictional town of Ramsden, Yorkshire, which has lost most of its male members to the war. As conscription papers begin to arrive, the society's ambitious committee decides to recruit local young males to fill the void. They engage Dr. Henry Guthrie, played by Ralph Fiennes, as their new chorus master. Despite initial suspicions about his past, Dr. Guthrie is determined to lead the group in a performance of Edward Elgar's "The Dream of Gerontius."
